As of December, 2022: Our girls have won five of the past eight Basin titles, while our boys have won five of the past 10 Basin championships. Our Varsity has won the combined city championship trophy 14, of the past 16 years. The Knight boys and girls celebrate their 2016 championships in Bloomfield. The Knights celebrate their boys' and girls' championships in 2014 at Farmington High School.

If you just like to run, OR you would like to get in shape (even if you aren't the fastest person alive), OR you would like to enjoy the social time at track meets, OR you are strong and can throw a shot or discus, Or you can jump high or far, OR you are willing to learn new skills, OR you would like to learn to pole vault,

OR you are faster than anyone your age, then see Mr. Leupold or Mr. Andrews and let them know you are interested. Out of eight teams in the San Juan Basin, in the past 20 years, the Heights track girls have been Basin champions in 2003, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019, second in Basin in 2010, 2011 and 2017, third in Basin in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2013, fourth in 2022, and sixth in 2006 (4 1/2 points out of fourth). The eighth-grade girls outpointed Mesa View 147-133 for the city championship in 2005. The Knight girls also won the city championship in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. The Heights track boys won Basin championships in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2022, outpointing second-place Aztec Koogler 150-96.5 in 2013. The Knight boys were in the running for the Basin title in 2007, falling just short to Aztec and taking second.

In other seasons, the boys were fourth at the Basin finals in 2003, second in 2004, fourth in 2005 and 2006, third in 2008, second in 2009, fourth in 2010, third in 2011, sixth in 2012, fifth in 2017, and second in 2018 and 2019. Heights finished half a point out of third place and just 12 points out of first place in 2006. The Knight boys have been city champions in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2022. The Heights eighth-graders won the city overall championship -- the girls' and boys' points combined -- for 13 consecutive years from 2007 to 2019, and then won it again in 2022. The Knight seventh-graders won the city trophy for most combined points from 2007 to 2013 and in 2015 and were second in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Heights owns five Basin eighth-grade records. In 2006, Josh Newsome blazed to Basin records in the 100-meter dash (11.02) and the 400 meters (52.13) and came within .02 of tying the 200-meter record when he ran a 23.02. In 2010, Zhianna McDonald broke the Basin records in the 100-meter dash (12.42) and the 200 meters (26.37). In 2017, Bailey Rasmussen shattered the Basin record in the pole vault, clearing 9-6. Former Knight Sayyeau had held the record (8-1) since 2014. In 2022, the Knight boys won Basin, which was held in Aztec. The boys got Basin championship performances from Isaac Lacey, who won the 800-meter run in 2:20.94 and the 1,600 meters in 5:18.14. Darian Watson, Adrian Morales, Hayden Bodo and Robert Hess won the 400-meter relay in 48.18 and Morales and Hess teamed up with Sataurus Griego and Kaleb Wiese to win the 800-meter relay in 1:49.08. The Heights girls finished fourth, two points out of third place. In 2021, due to COVID, we had a shortened schedule with a small team and finished the season with city quad. There was no Basin. The day before city quad, 18 of our athletes were barred from competing due to COVID quarantines. With 13 athletes, we wound up second in the city to Mesa View, which had more than 30 athletes and was able to score points in every relay while we were only able to field one relay for boys and one relay for girls. In 2020, we got to run in one track meet that didn’t finish — we didn’t get to run the 200s or the 4 x 4 at the end of the meet due to time constraints and

a faulty timing system. Then, the day of the second meet, the season was canceled due to worries about COVID spreading. In the only meet of the season, the varsity girls scored 99.5 points to Aztec Koogler’s 42.5, Hermosa’s 32 and Kirtland’s 18 and the JV girls scored 102.5 points to Koogler’s 22.5, Kirtland’s 22 and Hermosa’s 18, so we had a girls’ team poised to win another Basin title, but the season was over. In 2019, the Heights girls claimed the Basin title and the Heights boys were second in the meet held in Kirtland. For the girls, Kate Schwab won the 300-meter hurdles in 52.19, Landry Bales, Rachel Rodriguez, Rhyley Frantz and Sophia Coleman won the 1,600-meter relay in 4:40.43, Aydan Harper won the high jump with a leap of 4-10, Jenna Goodluck won the pole vault with a vault of 7-6, and Ani Chacon won the triple jump with a jump of 31-4.
