Griffin Family College Resources

Hello Parents and Families,

Below are some helpful resources for parents and students in regards to college courses as well as answers to some frequently asked questions.

Help for Students

● College Instructors are the best source of information regarding a student’s standing in their class and the student’s steps forward based on the remaining assignments and grading policies for the class. Students can meet with their college instructor during the instructor's office hours or by appointment. For the fastest response, students can email their instructor through the Canvas inbox.

● SOAR students are welcome to attend the student support center in order to get organized, caught up with work, discuss strategies to succeed, or to create accountability in their class. Peer tutors are also available by request and subject. The SOAR room is located in the main part of SJCHS Room 6110 with Mr. Campbell.

● SJC Tutoring Center offers tutoring in most subject areas taught here at San Juan College. If you are unsure if the subject area you need help in has a tutor, please contact one of the listed centers. They also offer online and in-person options for students: https://www.sanjuancollege.edu/tutoringcenter/

Please note the SJC Tutoring center is for college classes only. If a student needs help with High School classes they can contact SOAR.

● Technology Coaches are available for anyone who needs some technical support and can be contacted through email at: techcoach@sanjuancollege.edu or at (505) 566-3587.

Frequently Asked Questions

● How do I check my college grades? It is helpful if students check their grades on a regular basis this will help to inform their work and current progress in their courses. It would also be helpful if, as a family, you sat down with your student once a week in order to view their grades on Canvas. See “watch the short tutorial” in order to view grades.

○ Please note that high school grades are not accurately reported in Canvas and should be checked in PowerSchool.

● What is considered a passing grade in college? A passing grade in college is a 70 percent (a ‘C’) or higher, in most cases. It is imperative that students work to keep their grades at a 70 percent or higher throughout the semester.

● How to excuse absences for college courses? Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to excuse absences from the college as they are a separate entity and have their own makeup work policies. That being said, it is important to always avoid missing college courses as much as possible because many of the courses will not allow students to make up the work for absences for any reason. Most college classes also give a grade for a student's attendance. Ultimately, missing a college class is possible but a student needs to be aware of the rules in the syllabus and communicate with the professor in advance granted they are not required to accept make-up work.

● When is the last day to drop a full-semester class? The last day to drop a full-term class is Friday, November 11. However, short-term or late-start classes have different drop dates. Students should check their emails and announcements in Canvas for further information. They can also reach out to Ms. Calcote if they have specific questions at: calcotea@sanjuancollege.edu

○ Please note that while a ‘W’ or Withdrawal, is better than a ‘D’ or ‘F’ it does impact the course completion rate, which can impact eligibility for certain financial aid and scholarship opportunities in the future. (‘Ds’ and ‘Fs’ also negatively impact course completion rates, but also negatively affect GPA, while the Withdrawal (‘W’) does not.
