The Board of Education has been actively engaging with Farmington Municipal Schools administrators and educators, enhancing their knowledge and learning more about systems and systems of support, during their two-day planning retreat on June 28-29, 2023.
Here’s a quick update about this week’s actions.
During Day 1, the Board heard a presentation from Dr. Philip B. Warrick on High-Reliability Schools (HRS). They discussed how the work that started before the pandemic aligns with what is happening at the schools today. This includes improving systems of operation, monitoring those systems, and moving from random acts of improvement to aligned acts of improvement. The HRS framework, based on 40 years of educational research, defines five progressive levels of performance that a school must master to become a high-reliability school—where all students learn the content and skills they need for success in college, careers, and beyond.
Next year, the district will have HRS Impact Teams that will review what is working well and what needs more attention across different school levels. The district will also continue having monthly facilitators meetings for administrators to further support these efforts.
On Day 2, the Board heard from Dan Castille, FMS Counsel, regarding policies and procedures. The Board also approved changes related to public comments during meetings (B-2150). Now, individuals who wish to address the Board can relate their topics to district operations not just items on the meeting's agenda.
The next Board Meeting will be on July 11, 2023. View the agenda here.
