11/14/2023: Board of Education Recap

FMS Strategic Plan: During today’s Board of Education meeting, we delved into our Strategic Plan and several key goals. You can find more information about our Strategic Plan here. Here's a look at what five of our schools discussed:

Heights Middle School: School administrators and teachers discussed predominant instructional practices and how they are monitored (Goal 2.3). Part of the presentation included information about how 100 percent of the staff members are assigned an instructional coach to support them. Collecting data monthly takes place in every classroom, they explained.

Country Club Elementary School: Educators discussed their 90-day plans and how teachers have multiple opportunities to observe and discuss effective teaching (Goal 2.6). Each teacher sets a goal, and the school works to help them achieve it.

Apache Elementary School: Educators explained that the school curriculum and accompanying assessments adhere to state and district standards (Goal 3.1). Their presentation included the multiple ways in which teachers and administrators collaborate.

Mesa View Middle School: Educators explained how the work centers on making sure what students learn at the school is the same as they would in other schools or that all students have the opportunity to learn the critical content of the curriculum (Goal 3.3). Their presentation expanded on how educators track student progress.

McKinley Elementary School: Administrators and teachers discussed appropriate school and classroom-level programs and practices in place to help students meet individual achievement goals when data indicate interventions are needed (Goal 3.6).  Educators expanded on their work to make sure all students are being looked at to catch students falling behind before they fall through the cracks.

Part of every Board of Education Work Session now includes presentations from our schools on the current work being done to educate students, including observing teachers, teachers observing each other, collecting and analyzing data, collaborating, and providing resources.

Celebrating Excellence: The Board of Education recognized Virginia Weaver who’ll receive the John Batcheller Award for Excellence in Teaching Music from the New Mexico Music Educators Association. The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of music education in elementary schools. Ms. Weaver came to us as a brand-new teacher in 2009. She has been teaching music at Ladera del Norte since.

The Board also celebrated the coaching staff from Heights Middle School, who excelled in Football and Volleyball and are current Basin Champs.

Student Presentation: Grace Begay, a student from Animas Elementary School, shared her photos and thoughts on the 3rd-grade class visit to the Navajo Nation Zoo in Window Rock, AZ.

Approvals: The Board approved the sale of the property located at 1400 A E. 20th, the last building for sale in the district. 4S Services, LLC has offered to purchase the property for $595,000. The building used to house FMS Special Education.

The Board approved a change for their May 14, 2024, meeting, which coincides with Piedra Vista High School’s graduation. The new date is now May 7, 2024. You can find a calendar of upcoming meetings here.
