This week, FMS Student Nutrition attended the New Mexico Food and Farms Day at our state capitol with a very special guest, Carson Stark, a local farmer and senior at Farmington High School. Our Student Nutrition Coordinator, Marie Johnson, and K-12 by Elior Director of Operations, Skye Farmer, along with Carson accepted the Golden Chile Award for their efforts in providing fresh, healthy, New Mexico-grown produce in our schools.
Ms. Johnson has been vigilant in not only offering our students fantastic meal options for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner; she also implements sustainable and invaluable processes for procuring the freshest produce and subsequently recycling food waste via composting sites. Ms. Johnson and her team keep our Student Nutrition Department excellent from start to finish.
Carson Stark started his journey into farming during the pandemic when he started growing plants in the family garden. After mastering roses and lavender, he participated in a master gardening course through NMSU to learn even more about the cultivating process. Carson's dedication and passion for agriculture are unceasing as he takes on his next project operating an apple orchard, and further expanding his efforts to supply fresh local produce to San Juan County.
Congratulations to our amazing students and staff for the recognition of their hard work in developing relationships with local growers and supplying our students with fantastic foods!
