Awareness and Prevention Work from Students to Students

We are incredibly proud of our Titan Peer2Peer Group at Tibbetts Middle School. This dedicated group of twenty students works tirelessly on suicide awareness and prevention. They help by sending referrals, demonstrating coping skills, and fostering a supportive school environment. Thanks to their efforts, the school was nominated for an Innovation in Education Award from TeachPlus New Mexico last January.

In April, the group was featured in the national Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) newsletter from Sandy Hook Save Promise. They were recognized for their inclusivity, teaching peers to greet each other in various languages, and organizing an anti-bullying door decorating contest.

These students are nominated to join the group by their classmates based on their exemplary qualities. They tackle important issues, like the impact of social media, and share their insights with students. When we met with them last week, they spoke passionately about their commitment to helping others and building friendships.

The group, funded by the NMDOH, is now in its 9th year and reaches more than 85% of Tibbets students. Their initiatives include an Apps Board with recommended self-care apps, language learning tools, mood trackers, and journaling apps.

We are grateful to Ms. Alexia Martinez and Ms. Jennifer McKinney for their dedicated work with these students. Bravo, Titan Peer2Peer Group! Go, Titans!
