Update on Crossing Guards and School Zone Timers

Farmington Municipal Schools (FMS) is committed to the safety and well-being of its students. As part of this commitment, the district is implementing significant changes to the School Crossing Guard program and updating School Zone Timers for the 2024-2025 academic year.

New Crossing Guard Program

In collaboration with the Farmington Police Department, FMS is now managing the crossing guard program. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of students and families during drop-off and pick-up times. To enhance safety, FMS is hiring seven crossing guards for the following high-traffic intersections:

  • E. 20th Street and N. Hutton Avenue

  • E. 20th Street and Knudsen Avenue

  • E. 30th Street and Knudsen Avenue

  • E. 30th Street and N. Dustin Avenue

  • E. 30th Street and College Boulevard (Three Crossing Guards)

School personnel selected by the schools will cover crosswalks directly adjacent to schools in less congested areas around the City of Farmington.

Safety Reminders

In a combined video message, the Farmington Police Department Chief and the FMS Superintendent reminded the community of the importance of adhering to speed limits in school zones at the beginning and end of the school day.

“Our children will soon be back in classrooms, with many walking or biking to school. Let’s ensure their safety. We’re asking all drivers to follow speed limits and be extra cautious. Let’s all come together and keep our students safe by abiding by crossing guards’ directions and school zone timers. Thank you,” said Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe.

“The flashing lights and signs in school zones are there to help keep our kids safe. Please slow down, be alert, stop properly, avoid using electronic devices, make eye contact with pedestrians, and never pass school buses. Treat our students as you would your own children,” emphasized Superintendent Cody Diehl.

Updated School Zone Timers

This summer, FMS partnered with the City of Farmington’s Traffic Division to install Automatic School Zone Timers at all elementary schools and the combined Mesa Verde / Heights and Northeast / Hermosa campuses. This update, which cost the district $74,000, will be maintained by the City of Farmington. The timers are designed to enhance traffic safety by alerting drivers to reduce speeds to 15 miles per hour during critical times:

  • 20 minutes before breakfast begins

  • 20 minutes after school starts

  • 15 minutes before the end of the school day

  • 30 minutes after the end of classes
