Students Engage in Insightful Dialogue on Educational Equity

Today, the Student Equity Councils from both Farmington High School and Piedra Vista High School had the incredible opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion with the authors of The Yazzie Case: Building a Public Education System for Our Indigenous Future. This important conversation empowered our students to speak up for themselves and their peers, advocating for a better future in education.

The gathering took place in the FHS library, where students were honored to meet Ms. Wilhelmina Yazzie, one of the original plaintiffs in the landmark Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit. This 2018 case led to a major decision requiring the state to improve public education for all students.

During the discussion, students explored ways to make the educational system more inclusive and supportive for learners of all styles, cultures, and backgrounds. The Student Equity Council shared their observations about challenges in their schools and offered ideas on how to overcome them. It was an inspiring exchange of ideas, promoting understanding and collaboration to tackle the obstacles students may face.

We are deeply grateful to our special guests for sharing their time and insights with us!
