At today’s regular meeting, the Board of Education officially welcomed its newest member and gave the green light for some exciting student trips.
Welcome, Mr. Maize
Mr. DeaZhan Maize was sworn in as the new Board of Education Member for District 1 (Farmington). The oath was administered by Presiding Municipal Judge Gary Frey.
Approved Trips
The Board approved travel for two student groups:
San Juan College High School students will head to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
The Farmington High School Key Club is off to Orlando, Florida, to celebrate Key Club’s 100th Birthday. This incredible group has already completed over 1,450 hours of community service this year.
Celebrating Student Success
The Board also recognized students who recently shined in academic and skills competitions:
Winners of the Diné and Spanish Spelling Bees were celebrated (Top photo). At the start of the meeting, the three Diné Bee winners proudly led the Pledge of Allegiance in both Navajo and English. Read more here and here.
SkillsUSA champions from Farmington Municipal Schools were honored for their wins at the state level — Gold in Welding Fabrication Team and Bronze in Diesel Technology. SkillsUSA participation has tripled since last year, thanks to the hard work of students and teachers. Read more here.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on May 13, 2025.
