We are excited to announce that FMS will be participating in NMPED's “Level Up Reading Challenge” this year! Every elementary school will receive a Challenge Superhero Kit, which includes copies of "This is New Mexico/Esto Es Nuevo México." This bilingual picture book highlights popular landmarks, towns, pueblos, and cities across our beautiful state.
Leading the journey are Ralph the Reader and Ricky the Roadrunner, who will take students on exciting adventures to explore the diverse cultures of New Mexico. Teachers will have the opportunity to read this book aloud to their students or let them enjoy it independently.
The primary goal of this initiative is to raise literacy rates in grades K-5. In the 23-24 SY, schools that participated in the Level Up Reading Challenge saw increases in interim and state assessment scores. In addition to the primary goal of raising literacy rates, another equally important goal is to motivate students and make them an active participant in their literacy development. Ralph the Reader and Ricky the Roadrunner aim to collaborate with schools to create exciting and overwhelmingly positive classroom atmospheres where students approach reading and writing with a growth mindset, which equips them with the confidence to face any challenges they encounter head-on!
