National Native American Heritage Month

FMS, November is National Native American Heritage Month, and it's a special time to celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. Let's ensure that their incredible histories and contributions continue to inspire future generations.

Native American Heritage Festival

Be sure to stay tuned to our social media for exciting updates on upcoming events from FMS Native American Programs, including the FMS Native American Heritage Festival at San Juan College on November 4, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Frybread Day on November 14, and the FMS Native Fashion Show at PV on November 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We'll also be celebrating special themed days like Moccasin Day, Native Bling Day, Traditional Attire Day, Native Hairstyle or Másání Scarf Day, and Native Design T-shirt Day.

In our cafeterias, FMS Student Nutrition will be introducing students to new, delicious menu items! On November 7, secondary students can enjoy a Strawberry Yogurt Parfait with a unique flavor twist—sumac. Breakfast on November 13 will feature Lemon Blueberry Blue Corn Muffins, and on November 21, all grade levels will have the tasty Spam Burrito. For lunch on November 14, students across all grades can look forward to a warm, hearty Bison Kale Stew served with cornbread, along with a nutritious Three Sisters Vegetable Blend, available both as a hot side and a fresh salad option. We’re thrilled to bring these flavorful, nutritious dishes to our students!

The SJC Native American Center has scheduled a variety of events in November to honor and celebrate Native American Heritage Month, including Storytelling with Navajo Author Danielle Burbank on November 11, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., at the Henderson Fine Arts Center, Room 9012. You can also visit local museums, like the Farmington Museum in the city or the National Nuclear Museum in Albuquerque for a special exhibit on the remarkable contributions of Native American scientists and engineers.
