FMS, November is National Native American Heritage Month, and it's a special time to celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. Let's ensure that their incredible histories and contributions continue to inspire future generations.
Here's a list of events organized by Native American Programs (NAP):
- November 01: Registration for the JOM Parental Cost Program is now open. The registration deadline is November 17. You can find request forms at NAP offices or on our website.
- November 13: Join the JOM Indian Education Committee Meeting at the FMS Board Room (3401 E. 30th Street) at 5:30 PM.
- November 15: Attend the Native Fashion Show at Piedra Vista High School (5700 College Boulevard) from 5 PM to 7 PM. NAP welcomes elementary, middle, and high school students of all tribes to participate.
- November 16: It's Frybread Day! Learn more about this delicious traditional food staple. Interested school leaders, please get in touch with Native American Programs for more information.
- November 28: Come to our Book Talk! The Yazzie Case: Building a Public Education System for Our Indigenous Future, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, San Juan College’s Copper Top Building (Information Technology Center) Lecture Hall Room 7103, 4601 College Boulevard.
- November 29: Don't miss the Native American Heritage Festival from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Piedra Vista High School’s Turano-Chrisman Performing Arts Theatre, and from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, San Juan College’s Henderson Fine Arts Center. Only the evening portion of the festival is open to the public.
The public is welcome to attend the Native Fashion Show at Piedra Vista High School on November 15 from 5 PM to 7 PM, as well as the evening portion of the NAP Heritage Festival.
Weekdays During Native American Heritage Month
NAP also encourages students and staff to participate in designated days throughout the month:
- Mondays: It's Native Bling Day! Show off your Native jewelry, whether it's a family heirloom or supports Indigenous jewelry makers. Use #NativeAmericanMonth to share your photos.
- Tuesdays: Embrace Traditional Outfit Day! Wear your traditional Indigenous outfits and proudly represent your tribes and peoples.
- Wednesdays: Celebrate Rock Your Moccasins Day! "Rock Your Mocs" each week this month and use #RockYourMocs to join the conversation.
- Thursdays: Show off your Native Threads! Wear apparel from Indigenous creators and companies or your traditional outfit once again.
- Fridays: It's Masaní Scarf & Bolo Tie Day! Share the same style as your grandparents with floral scarves or bolo ties.

FMS Student Nutrition Celebrates Native American Heritage Month
All throughout November, we’re celebrating Native American Heritage Month! Our featured “Fresh Pick” is Squash! We will feature it on our menu in various ways fresh and in different forms.
- November 07: Students across all levels will enjoy spam, eggs, and potato burritos!
- November 16: It's a Thanksgiving Feast like no other! Delight in tender turkey, creamy mashed potatoes adorned with rich gravy, crisp green beans, warm dinner rolls, and the sweet finale of a mini pumpkin pie.
- November 28: Start your day right with a hearty breakfast featuring blue corn mush and a savory sausage patty, available at all levels.
