The winning word on today’s Concurso de Deletreo en Español en FMS (Spanish Spelling Bee) was “chigüín”, which means “small boy” or “thin kid.”
Our champion is Nataniel Condor Gaspar, an 8th grader from Tibbetts Middle School, who successfully defended her title as last year’s winner. Nataniel showcased incredible spelling skills and determination, securing victory in the fifth-round elimination against a tough competitor—Camila Piñón Chávez, also an 8th grader from Heights Middle School.
Some of the most challenging words in the contest included “oaxaqueño” (Oaxacan), “homeopatía” (homeopathy), and “organigrama” (organization chart).
Eighteen talented students from several FMS schools participated in this year’s competition, including Bluffview Elementary, McCormick Elementary, Heights, Tibbetts, and Hermosa Middle School.
We are so proud of all our students for their dedication to mastering the Spanish language. ¡Felicidades, Nataniel y Camila! ¡Gran Trabajo!
Both Nataniel and Camila are students of our excellent Bilingual Teacher, Ms. Eliana Tucker. Huge kudos, Ms. Tucker!
A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including Ana Sawyer, our amazing pronouncer, Cristina Acero, Yareli Quintana, and Raúl Márquez, our wonderful judges, and Diane Arrington, our supportive Director of Multicultural Programs.
This competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to celebrate bilingualism, challenge themselves, and grow their confidence. We can’t wait to see what next year’s contest brings.
FMS has been celebrating this competition for more than 25 years. You can read about last year's event here.
