President Ronald Reagan designated August 14 as National Navajo Code Talkers Day in 1982 to honor the contributions of Native Americans who served as radio code talkers in the Marine Corps during World War II. The Navajo Code Talkers used their native language to encode and transmit messages in a secret code that was vital to the Allies' victory in the Pacific theater. The code was unbreakable and confused the enemy with sounds they had never heard before. The code book used one to three Navajo words for each letter of the alphabet, including animal names and short words to convey information about the location of soldiers and the Japanese military, and to relay other wartime communication.

We welcome 6th graders only tomorrow, August 7! We want to give you your own special day to start your middle school journey with us. School starts at 8:30 AM, early is on time!
This evening, come get reacquainted with our school building, see what your child's pathways during school look like for all their classes and meet your child's teachers for this school year! Schedules will be distributed at this time but no schedule changes will take place.
FMS families, July 31 is the final day of our Seamless Summer Feeding Program, and we have something special for you! Come by Central Kitchen (305 N. Court Ave.) between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. to pick up free five-day meal kits for your kids, including both breakfast and lunch. These kits are available for all children 18 and under, so make sure to stop by while supplies last. See you there!

BAND parents, tune into this Zoom meeting on Wednesday, July 31st from 6p—6:45 PM IF you'd like to purchase an instrument for your child. Please know that the Tibbetts Band and Orchestra have instruments for every student and you will receive more information during the first week of school. ORCHESTRA parents, we are hoping that Tibbetts is going to have more than enough instruments to rent out to all the students. IF we run out, THEN we can talk about utilizing this company as well.

FMS In The News: SUN Bucks program provides food assistance to children in New Mexico. By Jacqlin Aragon, KOB. The New Mexico Education Department is making sure any student who needs help getting meals this summer aren’t left with no place to go. Eligible students can now apply for “SUN Bucks” with the launch of the USDA’s new summer nutrition SUN Programs. “We just really want to keep our kids nutritionally sound during the summer months while school is out. And when they come back in August, they’re ready to go,” said Marie Johnson, a student nutrition coordinator for FMS.
